Niva’s main subject matter has been the relationship between contemporary painting and space, colour, light and movement. In his works, he examines the conceptual marginal terms of painting and the possibilities ofextending them without losing sight of the visual starting point. His early pair of works entitled Mechanism of Three Overpainted Dimensions in Blue and Mechanism of Three Overpainted Dimensions in Red examine the culturally defined meanings of blue and red. They aim at negating each other so that the subject matter of the works, different pictorial sizes, would be highlighted. Various pictorial sizes include human size, TV screen size and painting size. The background to the I Spy with My Eyes…, is a children’s rhyme that is used in trying to find an object of a certain colour, while simultaneously teaching the names of colours. The artist has placed a series of grey paintings in an apartment and photographed them. In addition to the photograph, we can see the paintings as physical objects resting on a pedestal next to the wall.
